Chandler police warn of new car selling scam

CHANDLER, AZ - Chandler police are warning the public of a new car selling scam.

Police say the scam starts when a suspect breaks into a vehicle and steals only the registration.

The suspect will then post a similar vehicle online for sale at a reduced price and when someone calls about the car, the suspect offers to "hold" the vehicle for a fee.

Police say the suspect sends the registration to the buyer as a show of good faith. Once the buyer receives the registration they send a deposit or holder fee so the suspect doesn't sell the "mythical" car they really don't own.

After the suspect receives the hold fee money, they disappear.

Chandler police urge you to report any incidents like this, as they may be part of a bigger organized crime syndicate. The number to call is (480) 782-4130.
