CHANDLER, AZ - A police pursuit ended with an arrest after a man jumped into a car left running with a child inside at a Valley elementary school.
Chandler police Det. Seth Tyler said a mother was picking up her son at Kyrene Del Cielo Elementary School when a man jumped into the car that was left running while the woman was inside the school.
A 12-year-old girl, who was in the back seat, was able to get out of the car before the man drove off. Tyler said the driver rammed a police car after leading it into a parking lot near 56th Street and Ray Road.
The pursuit continued toward Future City Park near 50th Street and Ray Road, where the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, hit the police car again before he was finally arrested.
Parents and children were starting to show up at the park for little league games when the action unfolded.
Deena Schaefer was one of those parents and said her friend heard the crunch of metal and took cover.
"She heard 'put your hands up,' and she grabbed her two kids and ran behind the block fence here," Schaefer said. "They had handcuffed the guy and were taking him to the cop car."
Schaefer said there were several police cars in the parking lot when she showed up and she watched as the man was handcuffed.
"I was scared, I had my kids in the car, I didn't know if I should turn around," Schaefer said.
Police have not released the name of the suspect and say while charges are pending, they likely include aggravated assault, kidnapping, DUI and others.
