CHANDLER, AZ - Police have identified a man who died in an apparent shootout Thursday night at a Chandler apartment complex.
Three others were hurt in the incident which took place around 8 p.m. at the Laguna Village Apartments near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road.
Police said William Hammond, 48, was shot and killed.
It's not clear where he lived or why he showed up at the apartment.
According to Chandler police, Hammond went to an apartment at the Laguna Village where there were three people inside.
For some reason, the occupants and Hammond started shooting at each other. It's not clear who fired first.
According to the Chandler Fire Department Thursday, one person was suffering extremely serious injuries and two others had non life-threatening injuries.
Chandler police spokeswoman Ashley Lewis said the occupants and Hammond were firing at each other.
Police said they believe two guns were used in the exchange.
Lewis said the investigation is ongoing.
The relationships between the four people were still unknown Friday morning.
A neighbor, who lives directly across from the apartment, said a mother and her adult children occupied the unit.
Police would not release the identities of anyone else involved in the shooting.
The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she heard several gunshots.
"Too many to count," she said. She said there were a series of shots, a pause, and then more shots were fired.
She and her children ran to the back of their apartment to try and get far away from where the shots were fired.
Several families heading to school Friday morning said they were concerned about the violence.
Felica Beckham moved to the neighborhood three days ago.
"I'm frightened," she said. "Just trying to be a good mom for my son."
An officer on scene told her this type of shooting is "rare" in this neighborhood.
