APACHE JUNCTION, AZ - The Tempe Police Department said an ASU student who disappeared after hiking the Superstition Mountains Saturday has been found safe.
Police spokesman Michael Pooley said Michael Kmit, 21, was reported missing by his friends early Sunday morning.
Both the Maricopa County and Pinal County Sheriffs' Offices checked areas leading into the mountains and found Kmit's car at the Peralta Trailhead.
Pooley said Kmit was located around 6:50 p.m Sunday night and was taken down the mountain by the Pinal County Sheriff's Department.
PCSO spokesman Jeff Love said Kmit told deputies he got turned around on the mountain while trying to take pictures. It got dark and he was not prepared with light, so he started a little fire to stay warm and made his way out Sunday morning.
Rescuers say they plan to talk to Kmit about the dangers of hiking alone.
The Superstition Mountains are located to the east of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Gold Canyon, Arizona.
