Special needs family among those displaced by fire in West Phoenix

PHOENIX - Two members of a family with special needs are among 16 people displaced after a Sunday apartment complex fire.

Phoenix firefighters were called about 2:30 p.m. to the complex, off Heatherbrae Drive near 19th Avenue.

The cause is still under investigation, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Mae Yoe had to rush her husband and daughter, both disabled, out of their apartment.

“They didn’t even know that there was a fire,” Yoe said of her family, thankful they made it out safely.

Everyone else was safe, too.

“I grabbed the babies out of the bedrooms,” Donna Canez said. Canez did not have enough time to save her five dogs before the flames chased her out of the apartment, she said.

She had eight family members and friends living with her.

“None of us have anywhere to go,” Canez said.

The Red Cross is assisting people affected by the fire.
