Police make arrest in 2001 murder at West Phoenix Dollar Store

PHOENIX - One of three suspects in a 2001 Phoenix murder case has been arrested in Mississippi.

The shooting death occurred on June 16, 2001 when three suspects went into a Dollar Store near Thomas Road and 75th Avenue where police say the store clerk was assaulted and a customer, 41-year-old Jaime Hugo Olivera-Perez, was shot and killed.

Detectives worked extensively on the case, in which there was no known motive for the attack, but leads were exhausted and the case went cold, police said.

Cold Case Unit detectives began a review of the case in 2012 and with advances in analytical and forensic technology, a suspect was identified.

An arrest warrant was obtained and provided to detectives from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office where the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Moss Point, Mississippi.

He was booked into jail, charged with murder, and is currently awaiting extradition back to Arizona.

Anyone who has information about this case, or knows where the other two suspects may be, is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.
