Police say a man injured in an early morning shooting has died at the hospital.

Officers responded to an area near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday after a homeless man was shot.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, a homeless couple seeking refuge from the rain under an awning was approached by an African-American male who demanded the man's bike.

The man refused, and that's when police say the suspect shot him in the torso, took the bike and took off on the BMX-style bike.

The man was taken to a hospital with extremely critical injuries, where he later died. The victim is an adult man in his 30s or 40s. Police did not release his name as authorities were still working to contact his relatives.

Police said the investigation is now considered a homicide.

Because of the rainy weather, police were unable to launch their air unit to help find the suspect, who was described as wearing a black or gray sports hoodie with blue and gray striped shorts. The man appeared to be in his 20s, police said.
