Injured woman's sleep talking leads to arrests

Two people, including a 15-year-old, have been arrested in a Jan. 16 drive-by shooting that took the life of Brett Berholtz.

According to court documents, the shooting took place near 81st Avenue and Indian School Road around 10 p.m.

Police said 21-year-old Fernando Joseph Valdez and his teen accomplice drove to the parking lot, turned around and and fired several shots, hitting Brett Berholtz several times in the chest and a 22-year-old woman in the hip.

The two victims and another man had gone to the parking lot retrieve a phone from a car. The other man witnessed the shooting and told police that he had seen the car before and that it belonged to a home involved in the Mexican drug cartel.

Documents said that while the female victim was sleeping in the hospital she repeating the same letters and numbers over and over. Her mother wrote them down and contacted police. It was the license plate number of the car involved in shooting.

On Jan. 27, police took this information and found the car at a home near 48th Avenue and Indian School where they arrested the 15-year-old, Valdez was found and arrested later that night.

Officials said the suspects believed that someone at that home had stolen drugs from them. Both suspects are being held on $1 million bonds and charged with murder and attempted murder.
