PHOENIX - A suspect shot by a Phoenix police officer after assaulting the officer Sunday morning has died, according to authorities.
Sgt. Steve Martos said an officer was filling out paper work in a parking lot near 58th Avenue and McDowell Road when the suspect walked over to his vehicle.
The officer then rolled down his window thinking the suspect may have needed help, according to Martos. At some point, an altercation occurred and the office shot the suspect.
The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he later died, said Martos.
The sergeant suffered a minor injury during the altercation. Martos said he is a 29-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department.
Martos said the suspect has not yet been definitively identified. He said once the suspect has been identified and family members notified, they will release his name.
