Police say a man involved in a domestic dispute who tried to run over a woman and child was shot by a bystander Sunday night.

Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. to an address near 43rd Avenue and McDowell after a man tried to hit a woman and her child, police said.

The man and woman have a 3-year-old daughter together and were driving in the area when they began to argue, police said. The woman got out with her daughter, and then the suspect tried to back over the woman while she was holding the child.

Authorities said an unknown witness saw the incident and fired at the driver as he left. The shooter also left the area, police said.

The woman was not seriously hurt and the child was unharmed, according to a police spokesman.

About fifteen minutes later, the suspect called 911 from near 43rd Avenue and Buckeye to report he had been shot. He was taken to the hospital, but officers on the scene said he was hit in the shoulder and expected to survive. Police said he will be arrested on unspecified charges after he is released from the hospital.

Officers were not able to find the shooter.

No other information was released as of Sunday night.
