Phoenix police: 11-year-old drowns in west Phoenix above-ground pool

TOLLESON, AZ - An 11-year-old boy boy died Wednesday after being pulled from an above-ground pool, according to police.

Sgt. Steve Martos, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, said emergency crews responded to a home around 2:40 p.m. near 107th Avenue and Buckeye in Tolleson, Ariz after the boy was pulled from the pool.

The boy was flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he died, said Martos.

The 11-year-old has been identified as Ivan Nunez.

Preliminary information indicates that the boy was going swimming with his 10-year-old brother and entered the pool to remove the plastic cover.

Police said it is unknown if the boy became entangled in the cover, but remains under investigation.

The 10-year-old attempted to pull his brother from the pool, but couldn't. His older brother, 15, had to help.

Phoenix fire said the boy's father began providing CPR until paramedics arrived.

No other details were released.
