Police identify victim in Phoenix home invasion

PHOENIX - Police have identified a man killed during a home invasion in Phoenix overnight.

According to officials, the home invasion happened late Thursday night near 41st Avenue and Maryland Avenue.

Phoenix police said three armed suspects wearing masks got into the home through a rear door into a den and got into an altercation with 53-year-old Augustine Valenzuela.

Valenzuela's wife, a 20-year-old and a 14-year-old heard the commotion and went to check when they were forced to the ground at gunpoint by the armed men.

During the altercation with the suspects, Valenzuela was injured.

The suspects, who demanded valuables, left through the front door. Police said no vehicle was seen but that neighbors reported hearing a car speed away.

Valenzuela was taken to the hospital where he died.

Police are not sure if the family was targeted.

Friday afternoon, police released two surveillance photos of a small car that may possibly be connected to this incident. It can be seen in the slideshow above traveling in the center of the street in both directions.

Detectives have very little to go on and are asking anyone with information to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.
