PHOENIX - A man shot by the same suspect who killed a Phoenix police detective this week has died, authorities say.
Sgt. Steve Martos said police learned Wednesday night that 39-year-old Mario Valenzuela had died.
Valenzuela was allegedly shot in the back by 28-year-old William Ray Thornton on February 25 at an apartment complex near 40th Avenue and Camelback Road.
On Monday, March 3, Phoenix police detectives were following Thornton in an attempt to take him into custody on a charge of attempted murder in the case and a felony warrant on a probation violation.
Thornton was involved in a three-car crash at 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road and he jumped out of his vehicle in an apparent attempt to flee police.
Police said Thornton fired shots at detectives striking two before being shot and killed by a third.
Det. John Hobbs, 43, was killed and Det. Albert “A.J.” Casados was injured.
