FD: Man kicks through wall to escape Phoenix house fire

PHOENIX - A man and woman escaped a burning home by kicking through a wall Sunday night, authorities say.

Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Mure said the house has an attached bedroom and bathroom in the back and the man and woman were trapped in the bathroom.

Mure said the 26-year-old man reported that he heard a loud sound and when he went outside to check found the back porch engulfed in flames.

He went back inside and realized it was his only way out.

Mure said as crews responded to the fire there was a call of people trapped inside.

Mure said while firefighters worked to put out the fire, they also searched for the trapped couple.

Meantime, the man used his fists and legs to punch a hole in the wall and get himself and the woman out of the bathroom.

The man had minor injuries to his fists, but no burns, and refused to be transported to the hospital.

There is significant damage to the home near 39th Avenue and McDowell Road. The damage includes the attic, porch and three vehicles.

Officials say the fire may have started on the back porch, but the exact cause is under investigation.
