Emergency crews battle multiple fires, traffic hazards after dust storm hits Phoenix

PHOENIX - Emergency officials responded to multiple safety incidents Thursday evening, including more than 10 fires and traffic hazards, following a dust storm.

In addition to several small fires, officials responded to a couple of large blazes near 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

Fire officials said one fire was a first-alarm fire and the other was a second-alarm fire. Mark Vanacore with Phoenix Fire said the fire on Indian School Road involved tires and toxic smoke. He said there was NO threat to public safety, but all non-essential personnel were being kept away.

A fire official said 150 firefighters from multiple agencies responded.

Another fire burned through a commercial building nearby.

Early Friday morning a ladder truck was seen pouring water onto the smoldering fire. By 6:30 a.m. it appeared they had wrapped up at the scene.

Both fires are under investigation, but the likely cause was lightning, authorities say.
