DPS: Woman rescued as car catches fire on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix

PHOENIX - A woman was rescued just as her car burst into flames on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix, authorities say.

According to the Department of Public Safety, they received calls of a vehicle driving on a flat tire at the Deck Park Tunnel on Sunday afternoon.

The 55-year-old driver was apparently unaware of the flat tire and continued westbound until almost 51st Avenue where she stopped.

DPS said that by then her vehicle was smoking and some bystanders pulled her out of the vehicle as it caught fire.

Phoenix fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said the woman had collided with the metal dividing wires in the median.

Saavedra said the driver didn't appear to have any injuries, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Traffic was backed up for some distance behind the incident.

The freeway has since reopened.
