PHOENIX - A bicyclist was killed when he was struck after falling into the path of an oncoming truck in west Phoenix Saturday afternoon.
Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said the accident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday on Buckeye Road near 24th Avenue.
Holmes said a 57-year-old man, identified as Rubin Pina Herrera, was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk and swerved to avoid hitting a telephone pole.
Herrera lost control of the bicycle, fell into the roadway and struck the side of a semi-truck that was traveling in the same direction in the curb lane.
Holmes said Herrera suffered a serious head injury and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the truck that hit the bicyclist remained on the scene and was found to show no signs of impairment.
