PHOENIX - A 78-year-old man is in "amazingly good shape" after being stuck on South Mountain for nearly 12 hours Saturday.
Phoenix Fire Captain Tony Mure said the 78-year-old started hiking around 4 a.m., however ran out of water at 9 a.m. The hiker then called his son and told him he was at the Buene Vista trailhead.
The son went out to look for his dad, but after not being able to find him, called 911 at 1:40 p.m., according to Mure.
Fire crews started hiking the mountain in search of the man, but stopped due to the heat. A helicopter was also used, but was unable to find the man.
The man was found shortly after 4 p.m. Mure said the hiker was dehydrated, but otherwise OK.
