PD: Off-duty Buckeye police officer involved in shooting at Phoenix neighborhood market

PHOENIX - Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in South Phoenix.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the incident happened at a neighborhood market near Central and Southern avenues just before noon on Saturday.

Thompson said the shooting involved an off-duty Buckeye police officer who is a co-owner of La Esquina Market.

Thompson said a male suspect in his 20s went into the market and pointed a weapon at the co-owner.

The victim fired several shots and the suspect returned fire, Thompson said.

The suspect then fled the scene. It is unclear if he left on foot or in a vehicle.

Thompson said there were two young boys in the store at the time of the robbery. He said it appears no one was injured.

It is unclear at this time if the officer used his service weapon.

Buckeye police Officer Tammy Skaggs said the officer has been with the department for six years and is a patrol officer.

The incident is being investigated criminally and internally, Thompson said.
