PD: 3-year-old boy dies after Monday crash in South Phoenix

PHOENIX - A 3-year-old boy has died and his 5-year-old sister is clinging to life after an accident in Phoenix earlier in the week, according to authorities.

Phoenix police said on Wednesday that the suspect has been released from the hospital and will be booked into jail.

The accident happened on Monday just after 6:30 a.m. at 36th Street and Southern Avenue.

Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the driver of a Mitsubishi Galant was traveling westbound on Southern Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle and hit the curb. He overcorrected into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with a Pontiac G6.

A woman driving the Pontiac was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

There were three children in the car, ages 5, 3 and 1.

The 3-year-old boy died Wednesday and his 5-year-old sister remains in extremely critical condition, according to police. There was no word on the condition of the 1-year-old girl.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was ejected from his vehicle and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Crump said the suspect driver displayed signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug impairment at the scene of the crash.

Police said they would release the name of the suspect once he is booked into jail.
