PHOENIX - A 16-year-male is in custody after allegedly assaulting a 19-year-old woman on Thursday afternoon in Phoenix.
Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the woman was walking on a canal bank at 1 p.m. near 20th Street and Baseline Road when the teenager came behind her and grabbed her.
The suspect pulled her to a semi-secluded area of landscape, strangled her until she became unconscious and sexually assaulted her, Thompson said.
Witnesses in the area called authorities thinking two males were fighting. When officers arrived on the scene they found the suspect running along the canal bank near 16th Street and Baseline Road and detained him.
According to Thompson, the suspect admitted to officers his involvement in the assault.
Police said the suspect is expected to be charged as an adult.
The victim was transported to an area hospital and treated for her injuries.
The suspect has not been identified.
