Areas of South Mountain to reopen after storm

PHOENIX - After land and rock slides forced areas of it to close on Wednesday, South Mountain Regional Park is reopening.

Park officials said they have been able to clear enough debris off park roads to reopen several areas.

The main entrance roads will be open for the first mile. The Big and little Ramada areas will also reopen. As will parking areas for the Kiwanis and Ranger trails.

Heavy rains Tuesday evening initially caused several landslides at South Mountain. Some were as much as six feet deep in places.

The mud was deep that six cars became trapped on the mountain. Firefighters were able to rescue everyone from the area but the cars remained trapped until Tuesday afternoon.

Phoenix park officials have brought in additional equipment to help clear the roads. Still, officials said roads to the top of the mountain will most likely be closed until Friday.
