US Marshals arrest Johnny Juan Barela of New Mexico in Phoenix on suspicion of murder

PHOENIX - U.S. Marshals arrested a New Mexico man Thursday afternoon in Phoenix on suspicion of homicide, bribery and intimidation of a witness.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Johnny Juan Barela, 48, was arrested near 28th Drive and Cactus Road.

Officials said Barela was wanted in connection with the murder of Gregory Alonzo, 45, who died on March 18 in Roswell, New Mexico after he was stabbed.

Authorities learned that Barela had fled across the state border into Arizona and was possibly staying with his girlfriend in Phoenix.

According to officials, U.S. Marshals located Barela at a Phoenix apartment complex where he was staying with his girlfriend and took him into custody.

Barela was booked in the Maricopa County Jail and will soon be extradited back to New Mexico.
