Police: Darren Helton arrested, booked on charges of second degree murder in death of girlfriend

PHOENIX - Police have arrested a man accused of shooting and killing his 29-year-old girlfriend last week in their north Phoenix home.

Sgt. Steve Martos, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, said authorities believe Elizabeth Burch was killed by her boyfriend, Darren Helton, on August 1 at their home near Crave Creek and Greenway roads.

Martos said authorities were called to the home around 2:30 p.m. and found both individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Burch was pronounced deceased at the scene. Helton was taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Martos said investigators believe Helton attempted to commit suicide after shooting and killing the woman, but failed.

ABC15 spoke with Burch’s family members this morning over the tragic event. They tell us Elizabeth was a wonderful mother who loved her children.

The family is starting a funeral fund to help pay for burial costs.  We will post that information once it becomes available to us.

Helton was released from the hospital on Sunday and booked into jail on charges of second degree murder.
