Phoenix school bus crash: School bus driver dies after wreck; student, aid escape uninjured

PHOENIX - A Valley school bus driver has died after his bus slammed into a roadside wall in north Phoenix Wednesday morning.

A student and aid were also onboard when the accident happened near Dove Valley Road and North Valley Parkway. Both escaped the crash uninjured, according to Deer Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Ashley Morris.

Air15 video showed the bus sitting perpendicular to a street near an intersection and lodged partly through the masonry wall.

The driver, identified as Lawrence Joseph Plante, appears to have suffered some type of medical condition, according to Phoenix fire officials.

Plante was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition. Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the 56-year-old later died from his injuries.

Plante had served with the Deer Valley School District for over 10 years, Morris said.
