Phoenix police find 'suspicious device' in car to be towed

PHOENIX - Phoenix police say a suspicious item was found in a vehicle about to be towed from a north Phoenix parking lot Sunday.

Officer James Holmes said the vehicle was parked at a Fry’s store near 27th Avenue and Bell Road and as officers were in the process of towing it for a traffic related incident they saw what appeared to be a pipe bomb-type device.

As a precaution the area was evacuated and a bomb squad was called in.

The bomb squad determined the galvanized pipe found in the vehicle was designed to look like an actual device but was not explosive.

Holmes said the device was destroyed and no arrest has been made in reference to the device.
