PHOENIX - Police continue their investigation after a man was found shot to death in a north Phoenix apartment Thursday afternoon.
Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said officers responded to a “check welfare” call around 1:30 p.m. at an apartment complex near Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue.
Martos said the caller told police he was on the phone with his son when he heard a “scuffle.” After attempts to call the victim back failed, police were called to the apartment.
When officers arrived they found the 22-year-old victim had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Martos identified the victim as Christopher J. Winston.
While officers were at the scene, the resident of the apartment and a female friend returned and were questioned by officers and later by detectives.
The investigative lead and his girlfriend reportedly told investigators that the victim had entered the apartment armed with a gun and "demanded items of value."
Martos said a struggle took place between the man with the gun and the investigative lead, which ended with the shooting death of the victim.
The investigative lead was also injured during the altercation, Martos said. After questioning, he was released from police custody.
Martos said the investigation is ongoing and the case will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
