PD: 2 officers suffer smoke inhalation at fire in Phoenix

PHOENIX - Two police officers are being treated for smoke inhalation after responding to a fire in Phoenix on Thursday.

Phoenix fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said the fire near 15th and Peoria avenues was reported around 3:30 p.m.

Saavedra said before firefighters arrived, two Phoenix police officers saw smoke in the area, responded to the fire and began clearing all the apartments.

They were exposed to smoke and treated on scene for smoke inhalation. They were then taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Saavedra said when the first firefighters arrived they found heavy fire and smoke coming from a first floor apartment of a two-story complex.

The fire was quickly spreading to the second floor and a first alarm was requested to bring in additional crews.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire before it spread to other apartments.

Saavedra said it is unknown at this time how many people have been displaced by the fire.

There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
