PHOENIX - A woman who allegedly tried to rob a Phoenix jewelry store is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot several times by the store owner.
Phoenix police spokesman Tommy Thompson said the owner and the suspect exchanged gunfire Tuesday afternoon at Diamond Star AZ Jewelry near 13th Street and Northern Avenue.
The name of the woman hasn't been released, but police say she appears to be in her late 20s.
She was shot several times by the man who owns the store after she allegedly tried to rob it.
Authorities say she fled from the store but was found a short distance away and taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Greg Warton was in the smoke shop next door and could hear the terrifying scene unfold on the other side of the wall.
He told ABC15 he and the clerk both ducked when they heard several gun shots and a woman's scream.
"They blew out the front door, the glass just shattered all over the place," said Warton.
Warton said he sees the store owner all the time and said he seems nice enough.
He's shocked to have been so close to a crime scene, but not surprised the man was ready to defend his business.
"Any place that buys gold and diamonds, you're pretty much gonna be armed."
Police say the store owner was also shot but has less severe injuries. His name wasn't immediately available.
