PHOENIX - An 11-year-old boy has died after he was run over at a Phoenix apartment complex.
Police have now identified the boy as Enoc Quijada, but they're still searching for the suspect who killed him.
A mother and her son were walking around the Fountainhead Apartments near 35th Avenue and Indian School Road Saturday night, when the driver of an Isuzo Amigo backed into them, running over the child and just missing the mother, said Sgt. Trent Crump, Phoenix Police Department.
Sgt. Crump said the driver failed to remove the "club" from his vehicle before reversing, which prevented the driver from being able to steer or push the brakes. The driver drove through a block fence before coming to a stop around 7:45 p.m. Friday evening.
The driver helped pull the child from beneath the car and then fled, Crump said.
The child was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Witnesses indicated alcohol may be a factor in this case, but police have not confirmed that.
Police are investigating the incident and are working to locate the driver who is described as a black male.
Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-WITNESS.
A memorial now stands where Enoc was hit and it's still growing.
Neighbors, some who didn't even know him, are dropping off toys, notes and candles in his memory. They're also organizing a raffle to try to raise money for Enoc's family.
"This is a child, that just lost his life at a young age. On our property. And it should've never happened," said Darlene Brownlee, a neighbor.
Neighbors say they just want the little boy's family to know that they care.
"They do need to get this guy off the street, before he does it to another child," said Lupe, another neighbor.
