PHOENIX - The Red Cross is helping more than a dozen people who were displaced from an apartment complex after a fire Sunday afternoon.
A Phoenix fire official said when crews arrived they found flames and smoke coming from two apartments on the top floor of the complex near 11th and Peoria avenues.
Police officers worked to evacuate everyone from the apartments as firefighters arrived.
No one was injured, but two officers suffered some smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene, according to Phoenix fire.
The fire continued to spread through the attic until fire crews cut holes in the roof to stop it from moving further, the official said.
Phoenix fire said workers had been working on the air conditioning, but it was not immediately clear if that was how the fire started. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross said early Sunday evening that they were helping nine adults and four children with food, clothing and shelter.
