Southbound Interstate 17 reopens in North Phoenix after deadly crash

PHOENIX - Interstate 17 has reopened in North Phoenix after a deadly rollover accident.

According to the Department of Public Safety, one person was killed in a one-vehicle crash near Interstate 17 and Loop 303 involving a tanker truck.

The tanker reportedly drifted to the right, hit signs and then hit the median.

Northbound traffic was closed through most of the morning at Jomax. According to ADOT, all of the northbound lanes opened just before 1 p.m. Southbound lanes opened around 3 p.m.

DPS said approximately 6,000 gallons of asphalt oil from the tanker spilled onto the roadway after the accident and ADOT said crews working to remove the tanker dammed the oil to keep it from spreading.

The driver was identified early Friday evening by DPS as 47-year-old Baltazar Garcia of Buckeye.

DPS believes fatigue may have caused the crash.
