Friends, family call fallen Salt River Officer Jair Cabrera 'one-of-a-kind'

PHOENIX - Serving others and family were two of the most important things to fallen Salt River Officer Jair Cabrera.

Cabrera died last weekend after an alleged drunk person shot at him twice.

Detective Vicente Cendejas says he’s looked up to Officer Cabrera since he started six years ago.

“He was more than an officer he was a mentor a brother honestly,” said Cendejas.

Cabrera wasn’t scheduled to work the night he was killed.

“He wasn’t on shift,” said Cendejas. “He was actually working overtime for his family to make them some extra money.”

Detective Cendejas said getting drunk drivers off the roads was something Officer Cabrera lived for.

“He told me one time, ‘every time I take a drunk off the street I am saving a life,’ but this time they took his life,” said Cendejas.

Cabrera leaves behind his mom and dad, a brother and girlfriend.
