PHOENIX - Firefighters had their hands full battling a 1st alarm fire at a Phoenix 7-Eleven Thursday night.
The fire broke out at the convenience store near 64th Street and Bell Road around 7:30 p.m.
Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Larry Nunez said the person inside the store heard a pop in a light fixture above the register, saw flames and called 911.
Witnesses told ABC15 that it was the owner who was working and he was the only one inside. He was not hurt.
Originally, firefighters believed the fire to be accidental, but crews at the scene said they were getting conflicting reports from witnesses and decided to label the fire as "suspicious," until proven otherwise.
Fire crews tried to attack the fire from inside, but it quickly spread to the roof during a 'flashover.'
Nunez said the store is a total loss.
Arson investigators said they expected to stay on scene for several hours.
