Phoenix fire officials say a teen on his way to school was able to rescue his dog from a burning home.

Fire crews responded to the house fire near 15th Avenue and Beardsley Road around 7:30 a.m. Friday.

When they arrived, the fire was burning out of control, but was eventually able to be extinguished.

They learned that a 14-year-old resident of the home had just boarded a school bus when he saw the smoke. Officials say he was able to get off the bus and opened the back door of the home so his dog, Zach, could escape.

Mike Assi said the dog is family.

"I knew not to go in but if he didn't come out in that next minute I probably would have ran in there to go get him," he said. "It was the same thing as if it was my little sister or my mom I would go in for them."

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover damages.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Phoenix fire says it's important to not go back into burning structures for any reason.
