PHOENIX - One man is dead and another severely burned in an RV fire in Phoenix.
Phoenix Fire Department officials say a 29-year-old man injured in Tuesday afternoon's fire is hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns over most of his body.
57-year-old Kenneth Moore was trapped in the RV and died.
Police say the two had been fixing the motor home and had taken it for a test run when the engine caught fire as it turned down an alley near 27th and Northern avenues.
Michael Hawkins lives across the street and had just gotten home from work when he heard an explosion and ran to help.
He says neighbors tried to put the fire out using garden hoses but the heat was too intense.
"Before the water could even get to it, it was evaporating," Hawkins said.
The younger man managed to escape the vehicle but was burned so badly, Hawkins said, that his clothes were melted.
Buck Graver identified Moore as his roommate He says the man had been a friend for 20 years and had taken him in when times got tough.
"I just hope everyone remembers him for being a good man," Graver said.
