Dog on the loose stops traffic on Phoenix I-17 freeway

PHOENIX - Traffic was brought to a complete standstill on a busy Phoenix freeway Wednesday as a dog ran through traffic and people tried to grab the animal.

Arizona Department of Transportation cameras caught the action on Interstate 17 near Metro Center Mall around 9:40 a.m.

Video showed the small black dog running against southbound traffic along the center barrier wall, and through the middle lanes as cars moved slowly along the freeway.

Several drivers opened their doors trying to get the dog to get inside, but the animal kept going.

At one point, a woman got out of her car to try and grab the dog, but the animal then darted among cars in other lanes.

The dog eventually ran back toward the center barrier wall and continued running.

Department of Public Safety officers arrived on scene and blocked traffic while they tried to corral the dog.

The animal ran across several lanes of traffic and off the freeway, last seen disappearing into a business parking lot.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the dog ran off into a nearby neighborhood.
