I-17 has reopened in both directions after a smoky brush fire forced the freeway to close Thursday afternoon.

The fire sparked around 12:45 p.m. Thursday along Loop 303 just west of Interstate 17.

Both directions of I-17 were shut down because of heavy smoke in the area for about six hours. Westbound Loop 303 remains closed between the I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway as of 7:40 p.m.

Officials said around 7 p.m. that the fire had grown to 1,200-acres but has since been contained.

No homes or buildings were threatened, but Arizona Game and Fish says they've closed their main office in the area because of the smoke.

Multiple agencies responded to assist in fighting the blaze, including the Bureau of Land Management and the Phoenix Fire Department. Three air tankers and a lead plane also responded to the area.

It is unclear at this time what sparked the fire.
