Zipps shooting update: Victim's brother speaks out at initial court appearance

PHOENIX - Authorities say one person has died, and another injured, at a shooting outside a Phoenix sports bar.

Phoenix police Sgt. James Holmes said officers responded to the Zipps Sports Grill near 15th Street and Bethany Home Road shortly before midnight Friday after reports of a shooting.

Holmes said officers found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 44-year-old man and a 32-year-old Thomas Allen Marcussen were both transported to local hospitals, Marcussen later died, said police.

Holmes said the investigation revealed that both victims were sitting on a bench nearby when 29-year-old Jessica Wood approached them and began shooting.

Police said a witness was able to grab and disarm Wood until authorities arrived. Holmes said police have not found a relationship between the victims and the suspect.

Wood has been charged with one count first degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Wood stood before a judge late Saturday night for her initial court appearance. Marcussen's brother came to court to address the judge.

"I realize that you don't know what you have until it's gone, and what has been taken from myself and my family and my friends is going to impact our lives forever," Jeff Marcussen said.

He wanted the judge to know the man Wood allegedly killed was more than just a victim.

"A best friend, a son, a boyfriend, an uncle, an in-law and he's gone. He's taken for a random senseless act of violence," he said.

The judge set Wood's bond at $1 million.

Holmes said  Wood showed signs of intoxication, however, no motive has been determined.

He said a woman matching her description was at a nearby bar before the shooting when she allegedly threw a beer at someone and was asked to leave.
