PHOENIX - A volunteer at Longview Elementary School has been arrested after he admitted to obtaining child pornography.
Phoenix police said 27-year-old Travis Kinkaid-Mata was using a very popular social netwokring site to look at and share pictures of child pornography.
"It kind of surprises us that this particular site was used to upload these photos," Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said.
Police wouldn't say which site Kinkaid-Mata was using, but it's safe to say it's one most of us have heard of.
"We believe that he was sharing the media. We believe that the media was shared with him," Holmes said.
According to court documents, Kinkaid-Mata admitted to uploading images of young boys engaging in sex acts with other children and with adults. He said he's been sexually attracted to children since he was 12 years old.
Kinkaid-Mata was volunteering in the library at Longview Elementary School
"We're certainly concerned that he has been there for about a year and that he had in fact worked around children," Holmes said.
Holmes said there's no sign Kinkaid-Mata had any inappropriate contact with any of the children at the school, but he said this serves as a reminder how important it is for parents to talk to their kids.
"Especially in our younger children, we have to build trust with those children, especially as they're starting out in their school years," Holmes said.
As for the suspect, he's been booked on 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Police are looking into the possibility of adding more to that list.
"Now we served a search warrant on his home, his cell phone and on his computer. Those things still have to be forensically examined," Holmes said.
According to police, Kinkaid-Mata was volunteering at Longview Elementary through a federal student job placement program with Anthem College.
The school district said Longview students were not involved and school computers were not used to download any inappropriate material
ABC15 reached out to Longview Elementary for comment but we haven't heard back yet.
