It is one thing to talk about it, but it is another to actually do it. Do you, or your kids know how to get out if a fire starts in your home?
One new website is looking to put your family to the test.
It's called Escape My House and the goal is to put you in the hot seat when it comes to making time-crunching decisions. You can hear the crackle of the flames, as well as the persistent beeping of a smoke alarm. The site provides a 360-degree view at the moment a fire has sparked up inside a home.
Captain Dwayne Bader is with the Scottsdale Fire Department and they posted a link to the Escape My House program on their Facebook page this week.
"We try to put everything out there as much as we can," Bader said. "To explain how important it is to have an escape plan."
He said he hopes it is something people will visit as a family. That way, they can click through the rooms together.
"That actually shows you how fast something can burn in your home," Bader explained.
On the site, you can click through items to learn if that is something you can grab or something you should leave behind. If you make it out, it asks if you have created a "safe place" for all of your family members to meet at.
"It's the big tree out front; if it's the mailbox — just make sure everyone knows where it's at," Captain Bader said.
If you enter your home address at the beginning of the simulation, it will actually show your house with flames on it which is meant to create a lasting impact on your family.
From there, you can walk through a plan specific to your home; one you can print out and re-visit with your family.
