PHOENIX - Mayor Greg Stanton returned home early from a business trip to Hermosillo, Mexico to be in Phoenix after two officers were shot while trying to arrest a homicide suspect.
Stanton spoke briefly outside St. Joseph's Hospital Monday night where the officers were taken after they were shot at 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road earlier in the day.
One of those officers died, the other is out of surgery and recovering in the intensive care unit, according to Police Chief Daniel Garcia.
Stanton spoke of how sometimes Phoenix seems like a small city, and sometimes like a big city, but it's days like today that we face big city challenges, including violence like any large city.
He asked everyone to say a prayer for the family of the deceased officer and for the officer who is fighting for his life.
He urged the public to thank any officer they see to tell that officer 'thank you."
