Man faces 2nd-degree murder charge after traffic altercation outside Phoenix party

PHOENIX - A man faces a charge of second-degree murder for the shooting death of another man outside a party in Phoenix overnight.

According to Phoenix police, the 19-year-old suspect was leaving a party with his friend near 75th Avenue and Osborn Road around 1:30 a.m. where a car in front of them was stopped in the street, blocking traffic.

The suspect honked his horn at the car in front of him and the passenger of that car got out and confronted the suspect.

The two got into a fight, as did the driver of the first car and the passenger in the suspect’s car.

At some point the 19-year-old shot the victim, who was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say he later died.

The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Luis Gaona.

The suspect and his friend had fled the scene in their vehicle but his car broke down nearby and he was taken into custody by responding officers.

The 19-year-old suspect has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of second-degree murder.
