Suspect injured after officer-involved shooting following trespassing, throwing rocks at PCH guards

PHOENIX - A man was injured after an officer-involved shooting near Phoenix Children's Hospital at 20th Street and Thomas Road Saturday.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said they received a trespassing call just after 3 a.m. reporting that an individual had a bottle in his hand, was provoking security with profanity and holding the bottle in a threatening manner. Security officers had contacted the subject three times and each time he returned to the property.

When officers arrived, the man ran away and was chased by officers to the area of 20th and Virginia streets.

Martos said the suspect bent down to the ground and made a furtive movement to his waistband. As the suspect began to stand up, one of the officers fired a weapon, striking the suspect in the leg.

As the suspect stood up he began throwing rocks at officers and again ran away.

Arriving officers found the suspect near 17th Street and Yale where he violently resisted, requiring additional officers to respond, Martos said.

The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Martos said officers received minor injuries that did not require immediate treatment.

Martos said when the suspect is released from the hospital he will be booked into jail for aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing.
