The man accused of robbing customers at two Phoenix gay bars in one night said he did not choose the bars because of their clientele.

“It wasn’t a hate crime,” suspect Andrew Saiz said from jail Monday night.

Saiz faces charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.

“I don’t have no problem with gay people,” Saiz said.

Phoenix police also arrested Giovanna Leon in connection with the September 27 robberies outside Pat O’s Bunkhouse and Los Diablo’s. The robberies occurred one hour apart.

Saiz said Monday that Leon is his girlfriend.

No one was hurt in the robberies; wallets and cell phones were stolen.

Saiz said the robbery spree was prompted because he lost his job and needed rent money.

“Just, wrong choices,” he said of the incidents.
