Suspect dead after overnight shooting with officers

PHOENIX - A suspect is dead after firing at officers early Sunday morning during a robbery attempt.

The incident took place around 2 a.m. at a condo near 33rd and Northern avenues in Phoenix when police responded to a call for a possible break-in.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos confirmed that when they arrived to the scene, they located the suspicious individual on the roof of a shed.

Police say the armed man ignored officers' commands to put down the weapon.

The suspect reportedly jumped off the shed and fired at a group of five officers and the officers returned fire.

Officers told residents nearby to stay inside for their safety during the incident, according to a witness.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Investigators spent most of the morning processing the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as standard practice.
