PHOENIX - A man who escaped from a mental health facility in the Northeast and is suspected of killing his 91-year-old grandfather in Las Vegas Monday night is back in custody.
Steven Dale Woodard, 43, also allegedly tried to kill his father and his father’s roommate, according to KTNV .
Woodard’s mother Frankie lives in the Valley and family members told ABC15 he threatened to kill her six months ago.
Frankie claims the healthcare system failed her son, saying he has had mental health issues since 2008 and she tried multiple times to get him help.
"I believe with all of my heart this could have been prevented. And that's the sad thing. I'm sad today because we tried as a family to prevent this and the system did not work."
Woodard’s father told KTNV that his son is schizophrenic and abuses drugs.
Police said Woodard had also escaped from mental health facilities in Oregon and Washington.
According to Las Vegas police, officers found Woodard sleeping behind a vacant house and took him into custody without incident.
