Steve Gallardo ends Congress run, seeks county supervisor job

PHOENIX - State Sen. Steve Gallardo is dropping his bid to replace Rep. Ed Pastor in Arizona's 7th Congressional District and will instead run for Maricopa County Supervisor.

Gallardo said Tuesday he made his decision after Sen. Anna Tovar announced last week that she would not seek the county post now held by Mary Rose Wilcox.

Wilcox is running for Congress to replace Pastor. Also in that race is former State Rep. Ruben Gallego.

The 7th District is a Democratic stronghold in south and west Phoenix. Pastor's retirement brought strong interest from Democrats who want to win the safe congressional seat.

Gallardo says supporters urged him to seek Wilcox's sear after Tovar's announcement. He'll have about a week to collect approximately 500 signatures.

Wilcox says she's resign from her current seat Friday.
