St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance Mobile Pantry brings food to people in neighborhoods

PHOENIX - St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is helping to feed the hungry all over the Valley.

St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance gives out 30,000 emergency food boxes every month. People can't always make it out to the warehouse so the St. Mary's Mobile Pantry will deliver food to neighborhoods through December 21.

Volunteers set up at South Mountain Community College Friday.  By 7 a.m., a line had already formed. Two hours later, roughly 8,000 pounds of food were distributed.

St. Mary's spokesman Jerry Brown said 125 families were served.

People were filling up boxes of fruits, vegetables, bread, and pastries. About a dozen volunteers were helping to pack and carry boxes.

Jenny Sanchez, a grandmother of 10, said it's hard for her to make ends meet so she tries to get to the food bank every month. It's difficult though because she doesn't have a car.

"St. Mary's helps," she said. "(Otherwise,) we wouldn't eat."

Anyone can line up for a free food box. No identification or income criteria are needed.

St. Mary's will stop at South Mountain Community College on the following dates:

  • November 16, 2012
  • December 7, 2012
  • December 21, 2012

Distribution is from 7 a.m .- 9 a.m.  The location is 7050 S. 24th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85042 in front of the Performing Arts Center.
