Amidst the recent peanut butter recall, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance food reserves are quickly vanishing, according to a Thursday report.
They now have less than 50-percent of the amount of food they had exactly one year ago, directly affecting those who receive one of the 30,000 emergency food boxes distributed each month.
For the first time since 2008, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance has been forced to ration their non-perishable food items. Over 300 partnered organizations have been turned down for non-perishable food item requests because of the shortage.
Protein replacements other than peanut butter are in great need, including tuna, canned soups, stews and chilis, pastas and beans.
Rice, canned fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, cereal boxes and juice is also much needed.
Donations can be made at St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance locations or all Valley Goodwill locations.
St. Mary's is located in Phoenix at 2831 N. 31st Avenue, in Surprise at 13050 W. Elm Street and in Flagstaff at 1801 W. Route 66.
